As these changes occur the modulator adjusts the shift timing of the transmission according to the demand of the engine. The c5 differs with improved hydraulic circuitry and more generous oil flow. The c4 automatic transmission was introduced by ford in 1964. The transmission vacuum modulator valve determines how much load is on the engine so the transmission can shift properly.

I m aware that there s a vacuum line input to the c4 transmission from the intake manifold for use by the vacuum modulator or vacuum valve i think is what ford calls it. The vacuum modulator has a vacuum line which is attached to the intake valve and calculates the engine s vacuum amount. The c5 also differs from the c4 in the transmission cooler line fitting sized at 1 4 inch. I ran into the issue of not being able to easily locate my vacuum modulator tube on my torino and there wasn t a whole lot of info online.

It is equipped with a vacuum modulator that senses change in the engine s vacuum due to throttle position and load changes. C4 band adjustments are coarse thread and c5s are fine thread. When we talk about the load on the engine we are referring to how hard it must work just to maintain its functionality. You can be methodical and cover all the bases during a rebuild and still things can go wrong.

Either way both technologies have the same function.
