Fly line leader and tippet length.
The most common leader length is 9 feet so that is a great place to start.
Also the typical length to use when learning how to fly fish is around 9 or 10 feet this can be lengthened or shortened depending on the situation.
Most leaders you ll find at the store are tapered in thickness from one end to the other.
Best suited for 6 foot.
The thinner end will attach to tippet and ensures a more delicate presentation of the fly.
For example if i was going to use a size 12 fly a 4x would be the appropriate leader and tippet selection leaders come in a variety of lengths but the common lengths are six foot seven and a half feet nine feet and 12 feet long when selecting a leader size go for the six footer when fishing tight creeks or when tossing streamers but make sure it is at least 8 pound test or greater for streamer success.

Unlike the midsection the tippet is usually level without any taper.
Add tippet length if your fishing to easily spooked fish.
The thinnest section of the leader is called the tippet and can run anywhere from 1 to 5 feet in length.
Usually you ll find leaders in lengths of 7 5 ft 9 ft or 12 ft for anglers who fish in varying conditions with 9 ft as the standard.
This will also make your leaders last longer.
The midsection is where the majority of the leader s taper is found gradually decreasing in diameter over a length of 3 to 5 feet.
A 7 5 foot leader is common for bass and other aggressive fish.
This allows the angler to know when the tippet is getting shorter as it approaches the knot and replace it when it gets too close.
So most fly anglers will take a new leader and add 18 to 24 inches of tippet material to the original tippet right out of the package.
The thick end or butt section is attached to the fly line and provides stiffness and strength to the top of the leader.
When the tippet starts getting short you simply replace that part leaving the leader intact.

Fly fishing leaders are a tapered section of line that is directly attached to your thick colored fly line by either a loop to loop connection or knot for the use of tying on fly fishing flies.
What length to choose depends on the conditions but a great starting point is to go with a 9 foot tapered leader.
Fly leaders can be hand woven or mechanically made but are always tapered having one end thicker than the other.
So if you want to fish a 9 foot 5x leader for instance you can buy a 7 foot 4x leader and add 18 inches of 5x tippet to it.
